Kanye West and the late basketball legend, Kobe Bryant, used to be really good friends so the news of his tragic death really affected the rapper. During a new interview for GQ, Ye opened up about the type of relationship they used to have and admitted that he was definitely not doing well at all when his ‘best friend’ passed away shockingly.
The rapper mentioned, among other things, that he felt like Kobe was the ‘basketball version’ of him and also explained how his loss changed him forever.
While the interview was just published, it actually took place only three days after the helicopter crash that killed Kobe and his 13-year-old daughter as well as seven others on board.
Kanye obviously managed to show up for the interview but stressed that he was ‘not good’ when asked how he was doing.
The interviewer then asked: ‘How come?’ prompting the rapper to explain: ‘Because Kobe was one of my best friends.’
Kanye went on to say that ‘Everyone in our life is now a member of the Lakers on one of Kobe’s championship teams. The way Kobe would say we all have to come together and win this championship’s the way I now look at life. To an infinite, other level. This is a game changer for me. He was the basketball version of me, I was the rap version of him, and that is facts!’
Their friendship started years back after starring in a Nike commercial together but it was not something they displayed publicly much.
Still, Kanye would often show up at Kobe’s games and the two have also been spotted out and about in L.A.

‘We got the commercials that prove it. We came up at the same time, together. And now it is like, yeah, I might’ve had a reputation for screaming about things — but I am not taking any mess for an answer now. We are about to build a paradigm shift for humanity. We ain’t playing with them. We bringing home the trophies,’ the rapper shared.
