  • Mike started kart racing in 1995, aged 11, and participated in numerous local and national karting series through the late 1990s. In 2002, he won the Jörg van Ommen Kart Cup Super Series in Germany.
  • By 2001, he had started participating in car racing championships and stood 4th in the Formula König Championship (a now-defunct open-wheel racing series based in Germany) that year, winning one race.
  • In 2003, Mike finished 2nd in the German Carrera Cup (a one-make (all vehicles in the competition have identical or very similar designs/models) competition) and won the title in 2004.
